Miguel Chirinos was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1967 but grew up in the heroic city of La Victoria, Aragua State, in northwestern Venezuela. Although Chirinos’ career is related to Computing, he was always looking for opportunities to visit the historical sites of his country, especially related to the Liberator Simón Bolívar.
Although Chirinos moved with his family to the United States in 1996, his passion for Bolívar’s life would never cease. He took special interest in Bolívar’s trip to the United States in 1807, specifically on the east coast. As a result of this research, he became the author of a book entitled “Simón Bolívar in the United States: Bicentennial of his Visit (1807-2007).” The purpose of this work is to report in detail an episode in Bolívar’s life when he briefly visited the United States.
In 1999, Chirinos was part of a committee of Venezuelans, which organized humanitarian aid for the victims of a mudslide in and around Vargas State. In 2001, he became the first president of the North Carolina Venezuelan Cultural Association for the next four years. He has recently been in charge of organizing historic events for the association, including the commemoration of the bicentennial of Francisco de Miranda’s death (1816-2016) in the city of New Bern, North Carolina.
In 2009, Chirinos participated in the Book Fair in Cary, NC presenting his book in its two versions (English & Spanish). Also, he has been traveling and researching about the cities and towns named ‘Bolivar’; as well as statues and monuments of El Libertador in the United States. In 2011, he organized an exhibition called ‘Bolivar Blvd’ in a gallery of Duke University, in Durham, North Carolina, thus showing Bolivar’s legacy in the United States. More recently, he has been collecting information on the ‘Bolivar’ Post Offices.
Chirinos currently lives with his family in the city of Durham, North Carolina, where some years ago he began to write numismatic articles on notable Latin Americans that have appeared on the banknotes, including of course Francisco de Miranda and Simón Bolívar. These articles have been published in specialized magazines, newsletters and some of them are available on the internet. At the same time, participating in annual conventions of numismatic societies, international congresses and educational programs for young people in schools, community colleges and universities.
