Over the past decade, North Carolina has undoubtedly grown. According to the 2020 census, North Carolina is now the 9th largest state in the nation, with around 10.7 million people. That population growth has also brought with it significant economic growth. But increasingly, our state's growth, both in population and economic terms, is wildly uneven in ways that belie how much of North Carolina is struggling to keep up.
Today, Governor Roy Cooper signed a State of Emergency in preparation for impacts from Potential Tropical Cyclone Sixteen. “It is important for North Carolinians to prepare for potential impacts from the coming storm,” said Governor Cooper. “The storm's path has been difficult to predict and we want to ensure that farmers, first responders and utility crews have the tools necessary to prepare for severe weather."
