Asheville, NC: An interagency working group led by Governor Cooper's Office of Public Engagement and Inclusion, focused on immigrant and refugee community issues, will host a listening session for a statewide vision for diversity, equity and inclusion for immigrants and refugees in Asheville, Thursday, August 24, 2023, from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM, in collaboration with UNETE, Buncombe County, the City of Asheville, and the Franklin School of Innovation. The listening session will take place at 21 Innovation Drive, Asheville, NC 28806. Spanish interpretation will be available.
Governor Roy Cooper today issued Executive Order No. 278 to encourage more North Carolinians to apply for state jobs and to help state government recruit additional skilled workers. The Order directs the Office of State Human Resources (OSHR) in coordination with Cabinet agencies to take a series of steps to help more people with relevant work experience and skills to get state jobs without an academic degree. This Executive Order comes at a time when many state agencies continue to face challenges recruiting and retaining the skilled workforce essential to ensuring North Carolinians have safe, effective, and efficient government programs and services.
Today, Governor Roy Cooper visited and toured Wilburn Elementary School in Raleigh to celebrate Read Across America Week. During the event, Governor Cooper visited classrooms and read to students. “Read Across America Week is an important time to celebrate the knowledge that comes from books,” Governor Cooper said. “Educators at Wilburn Elementary School work hard, and it’s important we invest in our schools so that every student and teacher has the support and resources needed to succeed.”
Today, Governor Roy Cooper kicked off the Carolina Hurricanes Fan Fest in Raleigh. He sounded the Carolina Hurricanes siren and spoke about the impact of hockey in North Carolina. “North Carolina is a hockey state,” said Governor Cooper. “The outdoor game will showcase our state while supporting local businesses, strengthening our economy and boosting our national profile in sports. Go Canes!”
Today, Governor Cooper joined the United States Department of the Treasury and Internal Revenue Service in recognizing January 27 as Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Awareness Day to encourage eligible North Carolinians to claim the tax credit on their upcoming federal taxes.
With the possibility of icy conditions in the western part of the state and below average temperatures expected as an arctic mass approaches, Governor Roy Cooper signed a State of Emergency today to activate the state’s emergency operations plan, waive transportation regulations to help the transport of fuel and critical supplies, help first responders and protect consumers from price gouging. “We know that with the extremely low temperatures North Carolinians will need propane and other heating fuel to keep their families warm,” said Governor Cooper. “While propane supplies are strong in the state, there is a limited supply of licensed commercial truck drivers, which is being further exacerbated by COVID and flu outbreaks. The State of Emergency will help ease some restrictions and allow heating fuel companies to keep up with demand."
Governor Cooper is encouraging North Carolinians to pay close attention to the weather and take necessary precautions as the remnants of Hurricane Ian approach the state. “Hurricane Ian reminds us how unpredictable these storms can be and North Carolinians should be prepared when it reaches our state,” Governor Cooper said Thursday. “Heavy rains, up to seven inches in some areas, are likely to bring some flooding. Landslides are a threat in our mountains and there’s a chance of tornadoes statewide. Coastal flooding and gusty winds are likely as the storm passes through. This storm is still dangerous.”
RALEIGH – North Carolina is preparing for heavy rainfall and possible flooding on Friday and Saturday from the remnants of Hurricane Ian. Governor Cooper reminds residents that now is the time to complete their personal preparations. "While we don't yet know exactly how this storm will impact our state, it's clear that this will be a significant rain event for much of North Carolina and now is the time for people to get prepared," said Governor Cooper. "We are tracking the storm closely and strongly encourage everyone across the state to have an emergency kit and emergency plan in place."
