North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kody H. Kinsley will get both his annual flu shot and his updated COVID-19 booster shot at Russell's Pharmacy in Durham Thursday afternoon to protect himself and to encourage North Carolinians to get vaccinated this year against flu and COVID-19. Five flu deaths in adults have been reported so far this season, and the first pediatric flu death was reported last week.

Public health officials at the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services see a decline in flu vaccinations compared to previous years and urge North Carolinians 6 months and older to get their flu shot sooner late October, as flu season in the state typically peaks in the winter.

Influenza (flu) viruses generally spread in the fall and winter, and their activity peaks between December and February. Getting vaccinated now can lower your chances of getting the flu.
