RALEIGH — The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is reporting the first pediatric flu-related death for the 2023-2024 flu season. A child in the western part of the state recently died from complications associated with influenza infection. To protect the family’s privacy, additional information will not be released.

RALEIGH — Public health officials with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services are advising North Carolinians take precautions to protect themselves, their children and their pets from heat-related illness as temperatures across the state rise and remain high throughout the summer.

Wake County Recognizes April as Child Abuse Prevention Month

During Child Abuse Prevention Month, Wake County’s Child Welfare Division is reminding residents that everyone has a role to play in preventing child abuse and neglect. During the month of April, staff will be emphasizing the necessity for communities to work together to promote the social and emotional well-being of all children and families through an outreach campaign that includes several local events.

Children in the NC Health Choice Program Moving to NC Medicaid April 1

On April 1, 2023, approximately 55,000 children receiving NC Health Choice coverage will move to NC Medicaid and begin receiving additional physical and behavioral health services. This change will help save families money and increase access to care. North Carolina currently has two similar, but different, programs that offer medical coverage for eligible children — NC Medicaid, funded through the federal Medicaid program, and NC Health Choice, funded through the federal Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

Volunteers, Donations Needed to Help Keep Residents Warm during White Flag Declaration

With bitterly cold temperatures predicted for our area, the Wake Continuum of Care has declared “white flag” status through at least Thursday, Dec. 22. That means shelters will open to anyone who is homeless or without a safe, reliable heat source, as temperatures drop below 35 degrees. “It takes a village to operate these shelters and care for the guests who need a warm place to stay during this frigid weather,” said Wake County Commissioner Cheryl Stallings. “With the holidays approaching, finding volunteers to staff the shelters may be challenging, so we hope the community can lend a hand.”

Last Day to Apply for Child Tax Credit is Tuesday, Nov. 15th

Some families, especially those that did not file taxes, may not have gotten any or all of the funds that they were entitled to from last year’s child tax credit. The last day to apply for these funds is November 15th.

The new booster is becoming available in North Carolina following the Food and Drug Administration’s emergency use authorization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation.
