Three years of pandemic learning response: reaching learners across the world with life-saving health knowledge

26 January 2023 marks three years since WHO launched its first OpenWHO.org course on the then-novel coronavirus and started providing accessible, up-to-date and informative health knowledge for a diverse global audience amid the fast-evolving pandemic. As of this date, OpenWHO offers a total of 190 online courses, 46 of which address COVID-19 topics, and has totaled 7.4 million course enrolments.

Five billion people unprotected from trans fat leading to heart disease

Five billion people globally remain unprotected from harmful trans fat, a new status report from WHO has found, increasing their risk of heart disease and death. Since WHO first called for the global elimination of industrially produced trans fat in 2018 – with an elimination target set for 2023 – population coverage of best-practice policies has increased almost six-fold. Forty-three countries have now implemented best-practice policies for tackling trans fat in food, with 2.8 billion people protected globally.

As COVID-19 cases rise in the Americas, countries also face the threat of seasonal flu.

Health system preparedness is key, whether in response to COVID-19, extreme weather events or influenza.

“Too early to let your guard down”

"Too early to let our guard down," warns the PAHO Director on the two-year anniversary of the pandemic. As COVID-19 deaths exceed 2.6 million in the Americas and restrictions are lifted, countries must prepare to respond quickly to new variants or outbreaks.

Access to Childhood Cancer Medicines Worldwide

WHO and St. Jude of Memphis will dramatically increase access to childhood cancer drugs around the world. This is the largest funding allocation ever for childhood cancer chemotherapy drugs in low- and middle-income countries.
