The Department of Health and Human Services manages the delivery of health- and human-related services for all North Carolinians, especially our most vulnerable citizens – children, elderly, disabled and low-income families. The Department works closely with health care professionals, community leaders and advocacy groups; local, state and federal entities; and many other stakeholders to make this happen. Led by Dr. Mandy K. Cohen, the Department is divided into 30 divisions and offices. NCDHHS divisions and offices fall under four broad service areas - health, human services, administrative and support functions. NCDHHS also oversees 14 facilities: developmental centers, neuro-medical treatment centers, psychiatric hospitals, alcohol and drug abuse treatment centers, and two residential programs for children. Knowing when to increase or decrease measures that slow the spread of the virus depends on North Carolina’s testing, tracing and trends. This dashboard provides an overview of the metrics and capabilities that the state tracks.

COVID-19 cases and deaths
How are cases and deaths counted in North Carolina?
A “COVID-19 case” is a person who has tested positive for COVID-19. People are only counted as a case once, even if they have multiple positive tests.

As of September 25, 2020, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) began reporting on two new measures in the NC COVID-19 Panel: 1. Cases and deaths with positive antigen, and 2. Antigen tests completed. This change was made in accordance with the recently updated case classification guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
