International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8 every year, and it's an opportunity to recognize the contribution that women have made around the world. From fighting for civil and political rights to defending gender equality in the workplace, women have played a fundamental role in history and in today's society.

In the political sphere, women have led movements that have changed the trajectory of history. In 1920, the right to vote was granted to women in the United States, after years of struggle led by suffragettes. In the 1950s and 1960s, the civil rights movement led by women such as Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott King helped end racial discrimination in the United States. In 2019, women in Sudan led a peaceful revolution that overthrew President Omar al-Bashir, who had been in power for 30 years.

In the workplace, women have played a key role in defending gender equality. In 1963, the United States Equal Pay Act was enacted, largely thanks to the struggle led by women like Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem. In 2018, women in Iceland achieved a historic victory by demanding that they be paid the same as men for the same work.

In addition to leading political and labor movements, women have significantly contributed to science, technology and culture around the world. Ada Lovelace, considered to be the world's first computer programmer, wrote the first computer algorithm in the 1800s. Marie Curie, the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, made important contributions to physics and chemistry. In popular culture, women like Frida Kahlo, Toni Morrison and Beyoncé have created works that have influenced generations of women.

However, despite these contributions, women still face challenges and discrimination around the world. Gender-based violence, wage inequality and lack of representation in leadership positions are just some of the problems women face. International Women's Day is a reminder that there is still much to be done to achieve gender equality and ensure that all women have the same opportunities and rights as men.

International Women's Day is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the contribution that women have made around the world. From fighting for civil and political rights to defending gender equality in the workplace, women have played a fundamental role in history and in today's society. Although there is still much to be done to achieve gender equality, International Women's Day is a reminder that together we can work to create a more just and equal world for all.

The orange alert due to air quality will remain in effect this Thursday
