Peter Marin was born and raised in Mexico City. He has lived in San Francisco, Oakland, Madrid and New York City, and Raleigh, NC. He received a BA from UC Berkeley and an MFA from Hunter College. Marin has been painting for 26 years, and exhibits both nationally and internationally in Mexico, Spain, California, New York City and North Carolina. His work is part of public and private collections and foundations including The City of Raleigh and SAS. Marin was named Artist of the Year 2019 by Diamante, Inc, and is currently working on an installation at the North Carolina Museum of Art for the upcoming Frida, Diego and the Mexican Modernists exhibition.
Marín’s work explores architecture, color, landscape, the handmade, sacred geometry, nature, abstraction and identity. Architecture plays a central theme in his painting. As a Latino artist, his intention is to further the discussion on abstraction, moving it from formalist proposals to a more personal vision. Abstraction has proved a significant role in his development as an artist and in his understanding of contemporary reality. Marín believes that abstraction tells the story of us and with color he explores the emotional and intellectual.
Marin also works with Mexican craft arts, in particular those surrounding Dia de Muertos. This includes papel picado, clay, paper mache, ofrenda making, retablos, dioramas and sugar skulls. This year he will be installing a colossal ofrenda dedicated to Frida Kahlo as part of NCMA’s upcoming exhibition on the Mexican modernists.
Marín shapes his artistic decisions with his personal sensibilities stemming from his painting practice/experience/education of over 26 years and being a Mexican individual who immigrated to, and became a citizen of the United States. These ideas have shaped his personal abstract language, and motivate further exploration of his interest in painting and reinforced his traditional practices with Mexican craft.
